Mental Health Q & A

What is mental health?

Mental health is a state of well-being in which your thoughts, feelings, and actions are all in harmony. When you enjoy good mental health, you’re able to cope with the normal stresses of life, work productively, and make significant contributions to your family, friends, and community.

How can I achieve optimal mental health?

If you feel that you’re not functioning optimally, or if you have symptoms that make your life difficult or uncomfortable, you may have a mental health disorder. You can’t simply think yourself out of a mental health disorder, or hope that it’ll improve over time. Most mental health disorders are a sign that the chemicals in your brain aren’t performing their jobs, or that your brain itself may have some inherent or developed structural problems that affect the way you think, feel, and act.

At Atara Health Solutions, your psychiatric nurse practitioner helps you achieve improved mental health by prescribing psychiatric medications that help your brain work better. He may also prescribe medications that alleviate other troubling symptoms, such as a racing heart or trouble sleeping.

What kinds of conditions interfere with mental health?

Even if you’re mentally healthy, you may experience traumatic events that interfere with your mental health, such as a divorce or the death of a loved one. You may even need therapy, psychiatry, or short-term medication to get through the grieving period. However, when you’re mentally healthy, you eventually cope with the loss and regain your equilibrium.

If you have a mental health disorder, you may feel in a state of grief, loss, or fear even in the absence of a triggering event.

Some of the more common types of mental health disorders are:

  • Depression — feeling blue, sad, and listless
  • Anxiety — feeling anxious or fearful
  • Bipolar disorder — alternating between extreme highs and lows
  • PTSD — reliving traumatic events through flashbacks, nightmares, or behaviors
  • ADHD — inability to concentrate or control impulses

Most mental health disorders can’t be cured and require lifelong medication, with or without psychiatric help and behavioral or talk therapy.

How can mental health disorders be treated?

If you have a mental health disorder, your psychiatric nurse prescribes medications that alleviate your symptoms so you can function normally. He also monitors your reactions to the medications, checks in with you about side effects, and makes adjustments as needed.

You must comply by taking your psychiatric medications daily to achieve and maintain a more balanced state of mental health. Your psychiatric nurse practitioner consults with your therapist, psychiatrist, or primary care provider to ensure that your medication is adequately addressing your symptoms.
